What is justice?

In the film classic ’12 Angry Men’ (1957) a jury gathers to decide on the guilt or acquittal of a young boy accused of murdering his own father. The verdict must be unanimous. If all of the jury members vote guilty, the boy will be sentenced to death. The evidence of the boy’s guilt seems clear and beyond reasonable doubt, but one of the jury members (played by Henry Fonda) stands to defend the boy. Tension builds and characters reveal their true nature as they try to reach a decision in the sweltering hot jury room. A viewer is sucked into a thought-provoking journey that will raise questions in one’s mind long after the end credits end. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards, one of them being Best Picture. 

The AlphaNYC Theater Company is proud to present an off-off-Broadway stage adaptation of the movie masterpiece. ’12 Angry Jurors’ will be performed at the Corner Office NYC Theater in Midtown, Manhattan from February 20th through February 28th. 

Johanna Finn

Since jury members of today can be of either gender, the cast of ‘Twelve Angry Jurors’ consists of both men and women. Johanna Finn, an actress from Finland, is playing the role of juror number 11, a refugee and watchmaker from Germany who conveys a deep appreciation for democracy and America’s legal system. Juror number 11 has an interesting character arc from a quiet follower to someone who speaks her mind in pursuit of justice. The knowledge of world events of the writer’s time: the post-World War II era in Europe, and the Cold War and fear of communism in the United States of America give depth to the character, even though these events are never mentioned in the script. Johanna is thrilled to have booked this role, to tackle this interesting character, and to perform in Times Square. She feels that especially in the light of recent events, justice is still a big question on everyone’s lips, and that is one of the reasons why it is important to tell this beautiful and provoking story.

En la película clásica “12 hombres sin piedad” (1957) un jurado se reúne para decidir sobre la culpabilidad o absolución de un joven acusado de matar a su propio padre. El veredicto debe ser unánime. Si todos los miembros del jurado votan culpable, el niño va a ser condenado a muerte. La evidencia de la culpabilidad del muchacho parece clara y más allá de toda duda razonable, pero uno de los miembros del jurado (interpretado por Henry Fonda) destaca por defender al muchacho. Crece la tensión y los personajes revelan su verdadera naturaleza en su intento de llegar a una decisión en la sofocante sala del jurado. EL espectador se adentra en un viaje a la reflexión que plantea preguntas mucho después de los créditos finales. La película fue nominada a tres premios de la Academia, una de ellas mejor película.

Ahora, casi 60 años después, la Compañía Teatral AlphaNYC presenta la adaptación teatral de esta obra maestro del cine. “12 hombres sin piedad” (12 Angry Jurors), se representará en el Teatro Corner Office NYC de Midtown, en Manhattan, entre el 20 y el 28 de febrero de 2015. 

La actriz Johanna Finn

Dado que los miembros del jurado de hoy pueden ser de cualquiera de los géneros, el elenco de “12 hombres sin piedad” se compone de hombres y mujeres. Entre ellos, destaca Johanna Finn, una actriz finlandesa asentada en Nueva York, que juega el papel de jurado número 11, una refugiada relojera de Alemania que transmite un profundo aprecio por la democracia y el sistema legal de Estados Unidos. El jurado número 11 tiene un interesante rol del personaje de alguien que busca la justicia. El conocimiento de los acontecimientos del mundo de la época de la escritora la era post Segunda Guerra Mundial en Europa, y la Guerra Fría y el miedo del comunismo en los Estados Unidos de América, dan profundidad al personaje, a pesar de que estos hechos no son mencionados en el guión . Johanna no puede disimular la alegría y satisfacción de representar este papel y de actuar en Times Square. Siente que, a la luz de los recientes acontecimientos, la justicia sigue siendo una gran pregunta en boca de todos, y que es una de las razones por las que es importante para contar esta hermosa y provocadora historia.
